Redefining Afternoon Tea at The Standard Bangkok

August 07, 2023

Choco Cava Cone, Macchiato, Flower tartlet, Crunchy Coco, and The Orient Express

Bangkok’s eclectic Tease tea room, at The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, entices with a new venture with Thailand’s cocoa virtuoso, Pridi Cacaofevier, led by its founder chef Daniel Bucher. Right through August and September, the Tease x Pridi Afternoon Tea collab menu invites you into an exclusive world of delectable sweetness and savoury sophistication; all centred around the cocoa bean.

Pridi weaves a rich tapestry of flavours, selecting nine signature chocolates that harmonize beautifully with Tease’s vibrant atmosphere and audacious beverage offerings. These handcrafted chocolates became the muse for the chef team led by excutive Chef Daniel Masters at The Standard: the result? Audacious yet classic offerings fuelling a delightful afternoon.

Like any traditional afternoon tea, this one, too, starts with scones. But these are different – perfectly crumbly, their buttery richness is topped with a thin layer of Pridi chocolate; the scones are served with Chantilly cream and what appears to be house-made strawberry jam (delicious).

The foundation laid, the sweet offerings get exciting. The perfectly round, white chocolate encased Crunchy Coco seduces with a medley of Coconut, Caramel, and Banana, all elevated by Pridi Kinky Coconut Chocolate 52%. The Orient Express presents a mixture of Black Sesame, Peanuts, and Pridi Peanut Nutter Chocolate 64%. Macchiato is a canelé in disguise. Instead of the expected custardy interior, it offers a decadent explosion of robust coffee notes intertwined with the sweet, nutty richness of hazelnuts outlined with the dark allure of Pridi Black Magic 75%. The Flower tartlet blends citrusy blood orange, chocolate frangipane’s decadent sweetness, and Pridi Fruit & Flower Chocolate 80%. For the grand finale, the Choco Cava Cone comes filled with Pridi Signature Noir 64% Chocolate Ganache topped with Oscietra Caviar for a briny, salty end note.

Duck Party Pie, Macaron with foie gras, Iberico brioche and Scallop, Pear, and Scallion Tart

On the savoury side of things, expect the unexpected. Macarons find a perfect partner in the Pridi Black Magic 75% and Foie Gras filling. On a brioche, Iberico pairs with Blackberry, Pridi Hall of Flame 80% (the ultimate 80% dark chocolate I have had). Then there is the duck pithivier. Beneath the golden, flaky pastry exterior of the Duck Party Pie is braised duck that melds beautifully with the subtly sweet and nutty notes of roasted artichokes interspersed with tart cranberries, and the real pièce de résistance the Pridi Lady Lanna 80% chocolate. This pithivier is an ingenious blend of tastes and textures that simultaneously transport you to the French countryside and bustling Thai streets. The best pithivier I have had in Bangkok!

The Scallop, Pear, and Scallion Tart is an elegant petit four-sized masterful blending of the fresh, subtly brininess of scallop tartare with the floral sweetness of William pears, nestled within a buttery tart shell, and punctuated with the light crunch of finely chopped scallions. The Pridi Signature Noir 64% brings velvety bitterness for a deeply layered experience.

These indulgences are served alongside a selection of tea from the organic Araksa Tea Garden in Chiang Mai – Tease offers a selection of black, oolong, green and herbal teas. The Cheeva (green) with its zesty makrut (kaffir lime) notes is a winner.

The Tease x Pridi Afternoon Tea experience can be savoured from 1 pm to 6pm, priced at THB 980++ per person. Book your spot HERE for an affair you won’t forget.
